74-Z Speeder Bike
Polygons: 79, 680. Triangles: 159, 650. Software: 3DS Max, Photoshop, Vray
Another of my little side projects; I wanted to attempt something sci-fi-esque, and someone in the office has a wonderful scale model of this bike, meaning I had some fantastic reference. This was not intended to be deployable in real-time, but rather for pre-rendered sequences. It is relatively high in geometric detail, and also uses multiple diffuse, specular and normal maps rather than just one of each. However, it wouldn't be difficult to combine the mappings into one UVW template and make a lower resolution single texture.
Harley Davidson 'Fat Boy'
Polygons: 224,650. Triangles: 317,570. Software: 3DS Max, Vray
Despite being created in my second year of University, this is still one of my favourite pieces - who doesn't love a Harley though right? For this task we were given an unlimited polygon count (a joyous rarity!) and told to model as much detail as possible - hence the fully geometrically modelled tyre tread and engine components...
Spitbank Assault - Unreal Tournament III Level Concept
Hardware/Software: Pen & Paper, Photoshop, 3DS Max, Unreal Development Kit
This level concept is based on Spitbank Fort, a coastal defence built in 1878 in the Solent, United Kingdom. It is intended to be played as a single-player experience with the player landing on the jetty outside of the fort and fighting their way into the inner fortress building.
My plan views (above) of the level show the full product, including ambush points, objectives, weapon and item pickups. The various concept art pieces pick out specific elements or details of the level design. These were all hand drawn and then coloured and finished in Photoshop.
For the purpose of the requirements of the unit this was created for, only a small section of the enviornment was implemented fully, which is shown in the screenshots below, and utilises a mixture of bespoke and pre-made assets.
Csaba 39M Hungarian Armoured Scout Car
Polygons:29,462. Triangles:58,980. Software: 3DS Max, Photoshop, Vray
This model was a speed-modelling task I set myself. My Department at University holds an End of Year show to exhibit student work, and as the chap in charge of the Games exhibition I felt compelled to show off some of my own work too! Constructed, textured, lit and rendered in roughly 5 days, I reckon it turned out rather nicely. It would suit high to mid-detail work such as FMV sequences, although it runs happily in UDK also, so could be used as a focal vehicle in a real-time scenario too.
Unreal Tournament 2004 - Single Player Campaign Level
Software: UnrealEd 3, 3DS Max, Photoshop
For the purposes of my final year undergraduate dissertation, I required a bespoke single-player FPS experience that I could manipulate in certain ways in order to test the impact of doing so on players' decision making processes.
I had plenty of prior experience with the Unreal engine, and I managed to implement an add-on which ported across the enemy meshes and AI routines from the original Unreal allowing me to craft a fully single-player campaign-style level.
Whilst I only constructed one or two custom meshes for the level, the entire design process as well as the implementation was completed myself. I also scripted all of the events that can be seen in the level using UnrealScript, as well as constructing all of the various cutscenes using the Matinee editor.
The images above show a selection of interesting moments from the level, but a full walkthrough of the level can be either downloaded here, or viewed online here.
Spitbank Assault - Concept Meshes
Polygons:Varying, low to medium. Triangles:Varying, low to medium. Software: 3DS Max, Photoshop, Unreal Development Kit
This is a small collection of custom meshes made very quickly to illustrate some key elements of the level concept.
All of these meshes were modelled to the lowest possible fidelities, and all were textured using a combination of quick UVW unwrapping, Photoshop texture painting and the built-in material editor of the Unreal Development Kit.
